How to Build a Rain Proof (and Dog Proof) Chicken Feeder for under $30

I was having problems with my old chicken feeder in my chicken run. Water kept getting into it and, on top of that, my dog liked to stick her head in it and eat my chicken feed! I decided to build a new one that would remedy all of my concerns. After some researching and web-searching, I found some chicken feeder attachments on walmart.com for $15.99. They even came with a hole saw for drilling out the holes! But unfortunately, they didn’t come with any instructions so I just had to wing it. Here’s how I did it:

  1. I found a five gallon tote with a lid. I purchased mine from Walmart for about $10. You can use any size tote, or a five gallon bucket with a lid.
  2. Mark up 1 1/2 inches from the bottom of the tote and drill a hole with the bottom of the hole saw on the mark.
  3. Insert each feeder attachment with the gasket on the outside and the hole of the attachment inside the bucket facing down.
  4. Tighten the nut appropriately.
  5. Clean all the plastic shavings out of the container.
  6. I put the container on an 8 inch tall log, filled the container with feed, then I brought a chicken over and stuck her head in the feeder hole so she could teach the other chickens how to get food out of it.

What a great way to provide food stuffs to chickens that can’t be swiped by the dogs or coyotes. Keeping the rain out is another bonus and keeps the feed out of the mud. What a great idea at an incredible price. Can’t wait for your next installment

Thanks for reaching out. These attachments will last a long time. I really like the fact that when I get more chickens, I can remove the attachments and reinstall them on a bigger container.
